Privacy policy
SnipAlt is a tool for generating alt text from images you choose to snip on your screen. This policy explains what information we handle, why, and what we deliberately don't keep. We've written it to be read, not skimmed past.
The short version
- We store your email, a scrambled (hashed) version of your password, and your subscription status.
- The images you snip are processed to generate your alt text — we do not keep a library of your screenshots.
- Your snip history lives only on your own computer, inside the app.
- Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card number.
- We don't sell your data or run advertising trackers. There's nothing to sell or track.
What we collect, and why
Account information. When you create an account we store your email address and a bcrypt hash of your password (a one-way scramble — we cannot see your actual password). We use your email to identify your account and to contact you about your subscription or important service changes.
Subscription information. We store your plan (trial or Pro), how many trial snips remain, and — if you subscribe — a Stripe customer ID that links your account to your subscription. Your payment details (card number, billing address) are collected and stored by Stripe, our payment processor, never by us.
Snipped images. When you snip, the image travels securely to our server, which forwards it to our AI provider (Anthropic) to generate the alt text, then returns the text to you. We process the image to serve your request; we do not build or retain a stored collection of your snips on our servers. Per Anthropic's API terms, content sent through their API is not used to train their models by default.
Usage counts. We count snips on trial accounts (to meter the free trial) and apply short-term rate limiting to keep the service healthy. We do not log the content of what you snipped alongside these counts.
What stays on your computer
The desktop app keeps your snip history — thumbnails paired with their alt text — locally on your device so you can review and re-copy past results. That history never leaves your machine, and you can clear it inside the app at any time. Your sign-in token and preferences are also stored locally.
Cookies and tracking
The website stores a sign-in token in your browser so you stay logged in to your account page. We do not use advertising cookies, analytics trackers that profile you, or social media pixels.
Who we share data with
- Anthropic — receives snipped images solely to generate your alt text.
- Stripe — handles all payment processing.
- Our hosting provider — runs the server that powers the service.
That's the full list. We never sell personal information, and we only disclose it beyond this list if the law genuinely requires it.
How long we keep things
Account information is kept while your account exists. If you'd like your account and its data deleted, email us and we'll remove it within 30 days (Stripe retains transaction records as required by financial regulations).
Security
All traffic between the app, the website, and our server is encrypted in transit. Passwords are hashed with bcrypt. Access to the server is restricted to the operator of the service.
Children
SnipAlt is a professional tool and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll update the date above and, for significant changes, email account holders before the change takes effect.
